The Exeter-West Greenwich Senior Highschool provides many extracurricular activities and clubs for students to help provide experience and insight on potential career paths and/or interests. Amongst these extracurricular clubs is a school club named DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America). DECA is a nationwide organization with over 150,000 students. DECA’s mission is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. All of the current members are new to the club this year. Despite this, our chapter had a strong showing at this year’s state competition. 

This year, the six students enrolled in DECA representing EWG, excelled in their performance on both the objective tests and the skills-based application portion of the assessment. On February 11, 2022, these students were eligible to attend the RI state DECA competition in Providence. At this competition, with only minutes to prepare, had to engage a panel of industry judges in multiple content-specific role plays. Overall, the students placed in the top three positions in multiple areas of finance, such as accounting, personal finance, and entrepreneurship out of the other students from Rhode Island.

These exemplary results have now placed all of our students in the International Career Development Conference for DECA - this year held in Atlanta, Georgia from April 21-27. This DECA event will be days of competition based on multiple areas of finance. Additionally, at this competition, there will be leadership and career-advancing opportunities for the students. The honor that comes with representing our district at the national level also comes with additional costs. Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 to assist in funding the travel, housing, and meal expenses. We are really hoping to raise our goal because opportunities like these aren’t always available. The qualified students have the drive, determination, and power to succeed in their lifelong goals and this would be a huge milestone on the way.
